The overhang provided shelter from the rain while still allowing us to take advantage of the dramatic architecture and soft natural light.
The couple stood framed by the intricate doors and glowing chandeliers, creating a timeless setting that felt both elegant and distinctly Detroit. Barbara’s sweeping train and long veil added beautiful movement to the portraits, bringing a sense of romance to the historic surroundings.
When the rain eased later in the afternoon, we were able to capture a few additional portraits outside at the Detroit Institute of Arts. The iconic marble staircase provided another beautiful backdrop, with its grand scale and classic architecture complementing the couple’s refined style.
Photographing at both locations allowed us to create a collection of portraits that feel timeless, architectural, and unmistakably Detroit.

The celebration continued at the International Banquet Center at the Atheneum Suite Hotel, one of Detroit’s most iconic downtown wedding venues.
The ballroom was transformed with sweeping white drapery cascading from the ceiling, soft candlelight, and pastel floral arrangements in shades of blush, blue, and ivory.
Gold chiavari chairs and long banquet tables created a warm and inviting atmosphere where family and friends gathered to celebrate.
Polish weddings are known for joyful celebrations, lively dancing, and meaningful family traditions, and the evening quickly filled with laughter and energy.
Polish Wedding Traditions at the Reception
One of the most meaningful parts of Polish weddings is how traditions continue into the reception. These customs celebrate family, hospitality, and the beginning of the couple’s life together.
At Barbara and Phillip’s reception, guests experienced the traditional bread and salt welcome, followed by a playful Polish wedding ritual involving vodka shots.
When the newlyweds arrived at the reception, they were welcomed by their parents holding a tray with bread, salt, and two small shot glasses.
The bread symbolizes prosperity and the hope that the couple will never go hungry in their marriage.
The salt represents life’s challenges and reminds the couple that marriage will include both joyful and difficult moments.
After this blessing, the couple is given two shot glasses, one filled with vodka and the other with water. The newlyweds drink the shots immediately, often revealing through their reactions who received the strong vodka and who received the water.
Traditionally, the person who drinks the vodka is playfully predicted to be the decision-maker or “boss” in the marriage, while the one who drinks the water is said to take the more easygoing role.
After the shots are finished, the couple throws the glasses over their shoulders. If the glasses break, it is believed to bring good luck and prosperity to their marriage.
Some couples choose to modify the tradition if they do not drink alcohol, replacing vodka with water or other non-alcoholic liquids. In some cases, red or white wine is used to symbolize fortune and celebration.
This ritual often brings laughter and excitement as the reception officially begins, setting the tone for the joyful celebration that follows.
